It all started over a decade ago. At just 19, fresh outta high school, I made a leap of faith and decided to move to Dallas from my home town in Louisiana in search of a fresh start (call it greener pastures, if you will). Going to college never really crossed my mind until I was around 27. So I enrolled in school, but after 3 semesters, I got the feeling that college wasn’t for me. Even so, deep inside I knew I wanted a change because I was super tired of living from paycheck to paycheck, and struggling to make ends meet.

I remember laying in my bed praying to the man upstairs to deliver some change for me. I just didn’t see myself working for a company until I was 62. That’s when I decided to get my feet wet in the world of online e-commerce. Thanks to the power of the internet, I did a little research about e-commerce, and how to sell online. That’s when I stumbled upon Amazon.

I signed up for an Amazon Seller account, perked up my store with quality products, and within a week orders started rolling in. Remember this is when Amazon was lax on how sellers do their thing. I must admit that I was a little naive and eager yet filled with ambition and zeal. With sales trickling in, I didn’t have a clue what to expect. In my mind, I was like “Okay, this will be a nice side hustle (part-time gig).”

Holy Moly! In a matter of 30 days, I got so much more sales that I couldn’t keep up with the orders. And then it hit me: “I could turn this gig into a full-time thing.” Given that what I was making in a week with Amazon is what I’d make in a month at my current job, it made so much sense to take a Leave of Absence to focus 100% on growing my e-commerce venture.

Even still, I was torn on whether to go back to work or not. After one month, I succumbed to pressure and went back to my job, and guess what? I was laid off (see Termination Notice below). Usually, I’d get upset for losing my job, but I saw it as a blessing in disguise; a confirmation that e-commerce was my calling.

Fast-forward 4 months later … my Amazon store’s sales jumped from $2,000 to a whopping $100,000. Just like that everything changed. I went from living paycheck to paycheck to running a multi-million online business. This was back in 2012, and 6-and-half years later, I’m still working right from the comfort of my home. What’s more, I’ve expanded my e-commerce business, and I now operate 4 highly performing stores across different online marketplaces (here’s a screenshot showing the sales break-down of my Amazon store.)
